Australia

I've just been to see the film Australia - finally! Almost everybody that I'd spoken to about this film had told me that it was long, boring and a waste of time. They were wrong! It was great. I highly recommend it! It was certainly confrontational and a few of the people coming out of the film were saying that "it went on about the Abo's too much". They were also wrong - the film (apart from some of Nicole Kidman's acting) is really worth watching.

In total contrast, yesterday Marta and I watched "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" - another great film, but in a very different style :)

Yeah, your taste can be a bit non-conformist at times. I suspect Australia may not be quite as bad as it's been made out to be, but I fear I might have a tough time trying to find it down here.

Anyway, thanks for the tips. I'll keep an eye out for them :-)

We rarely go to the movies, but we actually DID go to Australia. I hadn't intended to... I'm really not a big Nicole Kidman fan, and I'm not great with movies generally. However Haydon announced that he wanted to learn something about the country he's chosen to live in and asked some Australians to go with him, so we did :)

I actually thought it was excellent. Others didn't, I know, but... I liked it. I still think it'll be on the English curriculum in most states probably by this year, but that was always coming!
I think the only thing that annoyed me is that little kids grow up fast! That movie spanned 3 or 4 years!! But he was a very cute kid!

My dad was born in Darwin before the war, and left on one of the last civillian runs out with his mum and two younger siblings (Grandad was in comms) - in fact, he left on a Catalina flying boat!! How awesome!! (he even remembers this!). Anyway, from everything I've heard from him I think the movie was pretty accurate, and pretty tasteful, I thought they dealt with the aboriginality stuff excellently - you know you're walking a fine line there, and I'm glad they got it right (at least in my eyes). My dad hasn't seen it, I should send it to him if I find it on DVD, I'd like to hear from him how it was.

I don't necessarily think it's a "must watch" (unless you ARE in high school or have a child who will be!), but I wish more people would. I think if more people saw "the abos" in that light - all ways they were portrayed there, it's a bit harder to just dismiss them as.. I don't even know what it is. How must of our current society sees them. Clearly our fault, but. I dunno. I thought it was really good.
